WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 -- A coalition of marine and environmental scientists, academics, and researchers has sent a public comment letter to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), urging against leasing areas of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) off the coast of American Samoa for minerals mining. The group emphasized the need for comprehensive scientific evaluation of the potential ecological impacts of seabed mining in a region that is home to fragile marine ecosystems.
