UT Permian Basin Takes Down Angelo State

Off to their best start in program history, UT Permian Basin scored on three straight drives to end the first half and never looked back, upsetting then-No. 5 Angelo State on the road, 28-14. It was the Falcons second win over a team ranked in the AFCA top five this season. UTPB is now 5-0 on the season and moves up to No. 6 in this week's AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl. Angelo State falls to No. 12. The Falcons don'thave long to savor the victory as they will host No. 13 Central Washington in the only top 25 matchup this coming weekend. Both teams sit atop the Lone Star Conference with 3-0 records.
The top four teams, No. 1 Ferris State, No. 2 Harding, No. 3 West Florida and No. 4 Kutztown, all registered wins, three of them shutouts, and kept their same spots. Western Colorado dominated Fort Lewis, 49-10, and jumps two places to No. 5. California's (Pa.) upset loss to Seton Hill, 16-7, allowed Augustana (S.D.), Grand Valley State, West Alabama and Minnesota-Duluth to move up multiple places to round out the top 10. With the loss, the Vulcans dropped 10 spots to No. 16.
There was a lot of jockeying around in the top 25, but only one team dropped out. Then-No. 22 Carson-Newman lost to Emory & Henry, 19-13, allowing Ashland and Johnson C. Smith to re-enter the poll in a three-way tie at No. 24 with Slippery Rock. The Rock lost a tough game to Gannon, 38-35, and dropped 10 spots.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. \- Campbellsville (Ky.) moved into the top 10 and Grand View (Iowa) retained the top spot in the fourth regular-season edition of the Netting Professionals NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, Oct. 6.
Two teams - No. 24 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and No. 25 Saint Francis (Ind.) - entered the Top 25 for the first time this season, while Dordt (Iowa) moved up twospots to No. 11, and McPherson (Kan.) and College of Idaho both climbed three spots to No. 21 and No. 22, respectively.
Top 10 Capsules
Full Top 25
Poll Methodology & Key
1\. Grand View (Iowa)
The top-ranked Vikings claimed the Rock & Ladder Trophy Saturday over No. 20 William Penn (Iowa), pulling away with a 21-point fourth quarter to remain unbeaten in their fourth-straight double-digit win. The defense didn't allow a touchdown until the fourth quarter, holding one of the NAIA's top backs, Destynd Loring, under 50 yards. Jackson Waring threw four touchdowns for GVU and added another on the ground, responsible for five TDs in all. Grand View's next game is scheduled for Thursday night, following a conference bye week, against Peru State (Neb.) on Oct. 16.
2\. Keiser (Fla.)
The Seahawks are gaining momentum with back-to-back 30+ point wins, including Saturday's 49-3 victory over Thomas (Ga.), setting a school record with 692 yards of total offense, including a program-best 398 on the ground. Dillon Simon ran for 152 yards and two scores, while Jorden Miller ran for 141 and another rushing score. Saturday, the Seahawks will look to stop the momentum from upset-minded Florida Memorial, after the Lions knocked off Southeastern (Fla.) last week.
3\. Benedictine (Kan.)
Benedictine is averaging 56 points per game over its four-game winning streak, including last week's 52-21 win over Missouri Baptist. The Heart of America Athletic Conference takes a bye week across the board, and when play resumes, Oct. 18, the Ravens travel to Central Methodist. In Saturday's game, MBU enjoyed a brief lead before BC put up 31-straight, and the Ravens rushed for 316 yards.
4\. Morningside (Iowa)
The Mustangs put up a season-high 69 points in a 63-point homecoming win over Waldorf (Iowa) last week, as Zach Chevalier completed 17-of-18 for 327 yards and five touchdowns. In all, the Mustangs gained 651 yards of total offense, building a 49-0 lead by halftime, while the defense held Waldorf to 175 total yards. Morningside returns to its GPAC slate Saturday afternoon, in Mitchell, S.D., at Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).
5\. Friends (Kan.)
The Falcons remained one of the most dominant teams through six weeks in the NAIA, closing up cross-divisional play in the KCAC with a 28-7 win at Ottawa (Kan.). Friends did trail for the first time this season, as OU scored five minutes into the game, but Friends scored 28 unanswered on rushing TDs in the first, second, third, and fourth quarters.
6\. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)
The Blue Raiders get a second-consecutive stern test in the Mid-South Conference, as Cumberlands (Ky.) visits Lindsey Wilson Saturday afternoon. Last week, Lindsey prevailed 37-13 at No. 11 Georgetown (Ky.), as Davontaye Saunders ran for 153 yards on 24 carries with three touchdowns, his third-straight game with more than 150 yards rushing. Lindsey Wilson was 10-of-14 on third downs.
7\. Montana Tech
Montana Tech turned in its most dominant 2025 performance to date in its Frontier East opener, using 21 first-quarter points to build a 28-7 halftime lead on the way to a 49-21 win over Dakota State (S.D.). The Orediggers' first-quarter scoring plays went for 62, 75, and 65 yards, and quarterback Jarrett Wilson accounted for five touchdowns in the game - three through the air and two more on the ground. This week, Montana Tech travels to Montana State-Northern.
8\. Montana Western
The Bulldogs are 1-0 in Frontier West play and have won four straight since a season-opening loss to No. 5 Montana Tech. Last week, Michael Palandri led Montana Western to a 40-20 win over Southern Oregon, throwing two touchdowns to Seth Shook, and Jakob Humphrey scored two of the Bulldogs' three TDs on the ground. SOU's Dom Montiel threw for three scores against UMW, but the Bulldogs were able to cement the game with three interceptions. Saturday, the Bulldogs are back at home, hosting nationally ranked Carroll (Mont.) at 1 p.m. MT.
9\. St. Thomas (Fla.)
The Bobcats were dominant to open their conference schedule in The Sun, up 42-0 at the half on Ave Maria (Fla.), on the way to winning their conference opener 59-0. Keely Watson threw three first-quarter touchdown passes and two more in the third, and the Bobcats piled up 27 first downs to the Gyrenes' seven, holding Ave Maria to negative rushing yards and only 83 yards of total offense. The Bobcats are at Warner (Fla.), Saturday. Warner seeks its first win of the season after falling last week, by a touchdown, to Webber International (Fla.).
10\. Campbellsville (Ky.)
The Tigers continue to surge after a 49-34 win over Cumberlands (Ky.) last Saturday at Finley Stadium, remaining unbeaten into a bye week. Campbellsville running back Tre Bass delivered a historic performance, accounting for five total touchdowns (three rushing, two receiving) and 316 all-purpose yards. The Tigers got on the board seconds into the game, as Ashton Auker scored on the opening kickoff, and the Tigers never trailed. After an idle week, Campbellsville welcomes No. 7 Lindsey Wilson to Finley Stadium on Oct. 18.

Week five brought a medley of exciting, high-scoring CIAA football action as seven teams surpassed 30 points this week. Fayetteville State and Virginia Union's high-flying offenses contributed to big wins that helped them stay atop the conference standings at 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, meanwhile Livingstone was handed its first conference loss by Elizabeth City State to send them down to third along with rivalJohnson C. Smith. Here's how things shook out:
Bluefield State 35, Shaw 33
Bluefield State exploded out of the gate with a dominant first quarter to secure their second win of the season, already doubling last year's total. The Big Blue put on a complete performance, scoring on offense, defense, and special teams, while also adding a safety, all within the opening 15 minutes.
Zaire Riley set the tone early, intercepting a Shaw pass and returning it for a touchdown just 18 seconds into the game. Quarterback Brice Koontz tossed three touchdown passes, including one during the early surge, while special teams added a 70-yard punt return to extend their lead.
Bluefield State finished with 366 total yards compared to Shaw's 312, using that balanced effort to maintain control despite a late push from the Bears. Shaw's valiant effort saw quarterback Alexander Marsh throw for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while the team added three scores on the ground. Still, the Big Blue's explosive start proved too much, propelling them into the top half of the conference standings at 1-1 while Shaw fell to 1-2 in conference play.
Fayetteville State 38, Bowie State 10
Fayetteville State leaned on its dominant ground game to power past Bowie State, rushing for 193 yards and four touchdowns en route to a balanced 338-yard offensive performance. Quarterback Demari Daniels led the charge with 146 passing yards while also pacing the team on the ground with 74 rushing yards and two scores, showcasing his dual-threat ability throughout the afternoon.
The Broncos struck early with rushing touchdowns from Caden Davis and the aforementioned Daniels to build a 14-0 lead, setting the tone for the rest of the game. They continued to find the end zone in every quarter, using a strong second half to extend their advantage and maintain control on both sides of the ball.
Despite the setback, Bowie State put together a strong offensive showing with 332 total yards. Quarterback Joseph Towler threw for 271 yards and connected on a 28-yard touchdown pass as the first half expired, keeping the Bulldogs within reach. However, Fayetteville State's consistency proved too much, as the Broncos moved atop the conference standings at 3-0, while Bowie State fell to 0-2 in CIAA play.
Elizabeth City State 39, Livingstone 27
Elizabeth City State quarterback Christopher Perkins put on a show in front of the home crowd, turning in a career-best performance to lead the Vikings past Livingstone. Perkins was unstoppable, throwing for 216 yards and a career-high four touchdowns while also rushing for 128 yards and another score, directly accounting for every ECSU touchdown in the win.
Holding a slim 13-7 advantage at halftime, the Vikings came out firing in the third quarter as Perkins threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers, breaking the game wide open. On the other side of the ball, ECSU's defense was relentless, recording five sacks, forcing a fumble, and snagging an interception to keep the Blue Bears' offense in check.
Livingstone totaled 321 yards behind quarterback Elijah Alexander, who threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns. His top target, Tavion Jackson, caught eight passes for 127 yards and a score, but the Blue Bears couldn't match the Vikings' second-half surge. The win marked Elizabeth City State's first conference victory, improving to 1-1, while Livingstone fell to 2-1.
No. 19 Virginia Union 44, Winston-Salem State 34
Virginia Union's ground game once again stole the spotlight, powering the Panthers to a 44-34 win over Winston-Salem State behind a staggering 408 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Conference rushing leader Curtis Allen continued his sensational season, racking up 249 yards and four scores, strengthening his case as one of the league's top offensive players. Three of Allen's touchdowns came in the first half, helping Union build a commanding 30-14 lead at the break.
While the Panthers controlled the tempo early, Winston-Salem State's offense refused to go quietly. Quarterback Daylin Lee continued his standout sophomore campaign, throwing for 278 yards and three touchdowns while adding 48 yards and another score on the ground. Receiver Jahari Mitchell was Lee's go-to target, hauling in all three touchdown receptions and finishing with 151 yards through the air.
Offense defined the night, as both teams combined for 951 total yards in a back-and-forth battle. The Rams rallied with three second-half touchdowns from three different players to keep the game within reach, but Virginia Union's early dominance proved too much to overcome. With the win, the Panthers improved to 2-0 in conference play and look poised for another championship run, while Winston-Salem State fell to 1-2 in CIAA action.
Johnson C. Smith 31, Virginia State 20
Johnson C. Smith quarterback Kelvin Durham continued his impressive season, leading the Golden Bulls to a 31-20 victory over Virginia State. Durham carved up the Trojans' defense with 251 passing yards and four touchdowns, guiding a balanced offensive attack that kept JCSU in control for most of the afternoon. His efficiency through the air once again proved to be the difference, as the Golden Bulls capitalized on key scoring opportunities.
Virginia State managed to outgain Johnson C. Smith 422-381 -- the second time this season they've outproduced an opponent in a loss. Quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr. was dynamic, throwing for 259 yards and two touchdowns while adding 86 yards and a score on the ground. After trailing 17-7 early, Matthews connected with Brian Lane Jr. for a 12-yard touchdown before halftime to trim the deficit to three, but the Trojans couldn't carry that momentum into the second half.
Durham found Reginald Daniel and Isaiah Perry for second-half touchdowns to help JCSU pull away, while the Trojans managed one final touchdown in the fourth quarter that wasn't enough to spark a comeback. With the win, Johnson C. Smith climbed above.500 and now sits third in the CIAA standings at 2-1, while Virginia State dropped to 1-2 and into the bottom half of the conference.
CIAA WEEK FIVE TAKEAWAYS
* Fayetteville State and Virginia Union remain as the only undefeated teams in conference play
* Virginia Union's Curtis Allen, a top-10 rusher in the nation, powered the Panthers to another conference win and continues to fuel their championship push.
* Winston-Salem State, Bowie State, Shaw, and Virginia State all suffered losses to fall below.500 in conference play.
* High scoring continues to be the name of the game for CIAA football, as 7 squads eclipsed 30 points.
* The halfway point of the season has officially arrived and the conference is up for the taking.
WEEK FIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Quarterback - Christopher Perkins, Elizabeth City State
Christopher Perkins powered Elizabeth City State to its first win of the season, accounting for 84% of the team's 409 total yards in a 39-27 victory over Livingstone. The quarterback tallied 344 yards and five total touchdowns, highlighted by a 73-yard scoring run that gave the Vikings the lead for good before halftime.

It has been a little over three years since Bethel (Minn.) has beaten conference rival St. John's (Minn.), but that all changed this past Saturday. In a close game that was knotted up at 10 apiece after three quarters, Bethel's Taye Manns broke loose for a 23-yard touchdown run with six minutes left to go in the game to give the Royals a 17-10 win. The win vaulted Bethel into the top 10 to No. 8 in this week's AFCA DivisionIII Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl, while the Johnnies dropped seven spots to No. 11.
North Central, Mount Union and Johns Hopkins all won big and remain in the top three spots. They are now followed by UW-La Crosse at No. 4, who had to use two overtimes to beat then-No. 10 UW-Whitewater, 23-20. The loss only dropped Whitewater two spots to No. 12. Salisbury moves up one to No. 5 after beating TCNJ, 55-10.
The AFCA poll might get another shakeup next week because of three top 25 matchups this coming weekend. First is No. 3 Johns Hopkins hosting No. 15 Carnegie Mellon while No. 6 UW-Platteville will travel to No. 17 UW-River Falls. The third and final matchup is a big one in the American Southwest Conference as No. 6 Hardin-Simmons plays host to No. 22 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
