Thiago Silva: I have to do this shirt justice
Fluminense's legendary defender is aiming for a successful Club World Cup campaign in what could be his final season as a player.
* Thiago Silva is an icon of Brazilian football
* Set to feature for Fluminense at the FIFA Club World Cup
* Rio giants face Borussia Dortmund, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD in Group F
'The Monster' left home when he was young, enjoyed amazing adventures around the world and is now lookingto complete his journey back at home; it sounds like the ending to a fairytale, but this is the story of one of the best defenders to have ever graced Brazilian football.
Back at Fluminense, where his career really got going nearly 20 years ago, Thiago Silva is ready to write another chapter in his already wildly successful career. In less than two months' time, the evergreen centre-back will compete at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025(TM) wearing the Tricolor shirt, in what he says could be the final year of his career.
Now 40 years of age, the central defender left the suburb of Laranjeiras for a second spell on European shores in 2008, where he went on to be a key figure for Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. Although Thiago Silva began to impress the world of football a long time ago, nothing comes close to the affection he receives from the club where he began his youth career, Fluminense. That's why 'the monster' wants to make history at FIFA's new global tournament - being held in the USA - by taking the coveted trophy back to Rio de Janeiro.
"I always try to speak from the heart. I could never have dreamt of experiencing that moment in my wildest dreams, you know? Putting on that shirt again after a successful spell away in Europe comes with huge responsibility. What I want most from these latter stages of my career is to win a title in that shirt. This is going to be a special year, and I hope that God blesses us with at least one major trophy in what will probably be my last year as a player", he said in an interview with FIFA.
"I never imagined that I might be able to leave Fluminense at such a young age and one day come back and represent the club in one of the most significant competitions in our history. I'd be lying if I said I had. It will be an honour to play at the Club World Cup for the team that I love and support. It's going to be very special, but I still have a lot of responsibility to do this shirt justice, to have a good tournament and to come away with our heads held high", he added.
Silva will have to be realistic when thinking about goals for his side; after all, 32 teams will be competing at the Club World Cup and each of them has earned the right to be there. Fluminense have been drawn in Group F alongside Borussia Dortmund, South African hot-shots Mamelodi Sundowns and Korea Republic outfit Ulsan HD and they will face further challenges should they progress to the knockout stage.
"We know that winning the tournament will be a tough ask, but we have one goal: to do Fluminense proud. That's our aim. It doesn't matter if we're playing Dortmund, PSG or Chelsea - we'll always try to give a good account of ourselves", said the centre-back. "You always want to win any competition you play in. But the same goes for the other 31 teams in the tournament. When you're playing in a Club World Cup with so many big clubs, you have to go out there and enjoy it."
In the group stage, Fluminense will be heading to New York New Jersey for their first two matches and Miami for the third. They are beautiful and bustling cities, the kind that people tend to return from with suitcases packed with souvenirs. What Silva wants more than gifts are memories and he already has a special kind of luggage that money can't buy.
We are, of course, talking about his experience. He has already been to four FIFA World Cups with the Selecao - including as captain - and won the FIFA Club World Cup 2021(TM), during his time at Chelsea.
"It's exciting going to play at another global tournament, as I was lucky enough to play in and win the tournament with Chelsea [in 2021]. I certainly have good memories of that tournament, and that's what I'll be trying to bring to the table with Fluminense, passing on the necessary information and how special it is. I also have the experience of playing at four World Cups, which is more or less the same thing", explained Silva.
He called upon the Tricolor fans to join them on their journey: "It's going to be an amazing atmosphere. I hope that the Fluminense fans will be in the USA in their numbers to bring that excitement and to make it feel like we're playing at the Maracana. The visibility this Club World Cup will give us... it really is a World Cup, you know? We are excited for a promising year."
Silva is also excited to be heading to the home nation of his great sporting idol, LeBron James: NBA star and veteran, much like Silva himself - the two of them are both 40 years of age and are prime examples of how it is possible to compete at the top of the game at their age, combining the discipline of a veteran with the motivation of a kid.
"My team is LeBron James, regardless of where he's playing", he joked. "Whenever he's playing and I'm able to watch, I'm supporting 'King James'. It's very special because we know that there is a lot of discrimination in sport when it comes to age. I do understand it because I know how difficult it is to keep playing at the highest level at this age."
Speaking of age, he remembers being less than 10 years old and watching Brazil being crowned world champions for the fourth time at the 1994 FIFA World Cup(TM). As fate would have it, that World Cup was won in the USA, the same country Silva and his Flu team-mates will be travelling to as they take on some of the biggest names in club football.
"That was a long time ago! It was a very special moment for me - it was around the time I started to dream of growing up and being a footballer. And that Selecao team definitely made me dream even more. Watching Romario and Bebeto playing together in that pivotal partnership. It goes without saying that the other players were also important, but as a child... I wanted to play up front, so I always saw myself as being a Romario or Bebeto, but I ended up going the opposite way and becoming a defender", he said.
And going on to be recognised as one of the best defenders of all time, no less. The cycle could now be closed in style: in the country where the Brazilian national team lifted their fourth World Cup trophy, wearing the colours of the club that created a 'Monster', Thiago Silva will be trying to write the perfect ending to his tale.

Argentinian marksman Lautaro Martinez added to his Internazionale legacy by scoring his 150th goal for the club.
* Inter advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after overcoming Bayern
* Martinez scored two crucial goals across both legs to help the Nerazzurri edge past the German outfit
* The Argentinian is the first foreign player to score 150 goals for the club
Lautaro Martinez played a pivotalrole in the tie between FC Internazionale Milano and FC Bayern Munchen, captaining his side and spurring them on to victory, securing their progress to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League.
Not only did he bag two goals across both legs of the quarter-final, but the Argentinian also put in two magnificent performances, both at the Allianz Arena and at the San Siro. The No10 showcased all his abilities, from his leadership skills to his technical talent.
Martinez had already become the most prolific foreign goalscorer in Inter's history, but Wednesday's goal saw him reach yet another important milestone. El Toro from Bahia Blanca has now found the back of the net an astonishing 150 times for the Nerazzurri, a figure that further cements his status as a stalwart of the club.
Martinez's pride
The Albiceleste striker explained to the club's official channel what his 150th goal means to him: "Every goal I score is special, it's the result of all my hard work. But today was definitely all the more special because it helped us progress to the next round of the competition. I didn't hesitate for a second when the ball popped up, I just rifled it home. It was a very important night for us. We've made it to the semi-final and are among the four best teams in Europe, we're incredibly proud and happy."
Martinez also sent a clear message to the other UEFA Champions League semi-finalists, as well as to Serie A and the teams competing in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025(TM), which will take place in the USA in June and July: "We believe in ourselves, we never give up and we want to win every competition we take part in. This is the attitude we need to take Inter Milan to the top."
The road to glory
Inter will now face Barcelona in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. In 2010, when the Nerazzurri won their famous treble, they defeated Barcelona in the semi-final of the competition before overcoming Bayern in the final at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
In the meantime, Simone Inzaghi's men will be looking to continue their rich vein of form in the Coppa Italia, where they face Milan in the second leg after a 1-1 draw in the first leg, and in the league, where they currently sit three points clear of Napoli at the top of the table.
Then, Inter will travel to the USA for the Club World Cup 2025, where they have been drawn in Group E with CF Monterrey, CA River Plate and Urawa Red Diamonds. As Inzaghi has said many times before, Inter are determined to win it all this year. With Martinez in the fold, it will be there for the taking.
