This initiative aims to foster ethical, legal, and societal considerations in the advancement of key technological areas.
The ReDDDoT program seeks proposals from multidisciplinary and multi-sector teams focused on artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and/or natural and anthropogenic disaster prevention or mitigation. The NSF anticipates making approximately31 awards, with individual grants ranging from $75,000 to a maximum of $1,500,000.
A wide array of entities are eligible to apply, including U.S.-based for-profit organizations (including small businesses with strong research capabilities), state and local governments, and accredited U.S. Institutions of Higher Education (including community colleges). Tribal Nations and U.S.-based non-profit, non-academic organizations directly involved in education or research are also encouraged to apply. Notably, the project leadership should include individuals with expertise in responsible technology design, development, and deployment.
The program has two primary goals: to enhance collaboration across academia, industry, non-profit, and government for technology translation, and to ensure ethical and societal values are integrated into the technology lifecycle to benefit the public. The NSF highlights the importance of accelerating innovation, creating broad communities of interest, educating the STEM workforce, facilitating societal benefits while mitigating harms, and empowering public participation in technology development.
This funding opportunity will support three project types in Fiscal Year 2025: "Execute" projects for established teams with a track record of impactful activities; "Explore" projects for exploratory and formative work to validate responsible design approaches; and "Inform (Workshop)" projects for convenings that share expertise across relevant ecosystems.
The deadline for applications is July 08, 2025.
