WASHINGTON, April 25 -- Len Gougeon, professor emeritus in the department of English and theatre at the University of Scranton, released his fifth book examining the intellectual conflict between English and American elites during the U.S. Civil War. The research document, titled Old England, New England and the Civil War: How a Clash of Cultures Ignited a Global Campaign for Racial Equality and Civil Rights, explores how differing ideologies regarding race and social hierarchy shaped the era.
