WASHINGTON, March 25 -- New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani joined elected officials and advocates on March 19, 2026, to appoint Renita Francois as the first-ever deputy mayor for community safety. During the announcement, Mamdani signed an executive order creating the Office of Community Safety to centralize disparate agencies focusing on gun violence, mental health and hate crime prevention.
