WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 -- Bowdoin College is highlighting a publication by Professor of Art Michael Kolster that explores how plastic waste fused with volcanic rock and sand on Hawaii's Big Island may become a permanent marker of humanity's presence in the geological record.

Kolster's book, Mongrels of Our Making: The Plastiglomerates of Hawai'i, released by George F. Thompson Publishing, centers on plastiglomerates--hybrid formations created when beachside campfire . . .
