WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 -- In a parliamentary statement delivered at the House of Commons, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper strongly condemned the guilty verdict handed down to British citizen Jimmy Lai by Hong Kong courts. Cooper described the prosecution of the 78-year-old media tycoon as a violation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration and instructed the Foreign Office to summon the Chinese ambassador in protest.
