NRC Event Notification: Florida University Disposes of Radioactive Device

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (TNSoth) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was alerted by the Florida Bureau of Radiation Control on August 8, 2025, to an incident at Florida A&M University, Tallahassee. A scintillation counter containing a radioactive Cesium-137 source was improperly disposed of as regular waste. The device, a Beckman Coulter Model LS6500 with an embedded 30 mCi Cs-137 external quench monitor, was removed from a laboratory after a professor requested its disposal.
