WASHINGTON, July 30 -- An Am-241/Be radioactive source, commonly used in nuclear gauges, ruptured on May 8, 2025, during a recovery operation at Instrotek, a company based in Durham, North Carolina. The incident, reported by the North Carolina Division of Radiation Protection, resulted in the contamination of one worker.
According to the report, the 50 mCi source, model CPN23, ruptured while being removed from a downhole probe. Immediate leak tests "pegged" the licensee . . .
