LANSING, Michigan, June 20 -- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, D-Michigan, issued the following news release on June 19, 2022:
Today marks the first time Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday in Michigan
Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II issued a proclamation declaring June 19th as Juneteenth Celebration Day in Michigan. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when slavery was abolished in the United States.
