As advances in computing result in smaller components packed more densely to achieve higher performance, engineers are approaching a mind-boggling milestone: Soon, it's estimated, parts of the world's fastest supercomputers will give off as much heat per square inch as the surface of the sun, requiring significant cooling to keep them functioning.
