Oregon's U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley--a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a leading voice on supporting democracy and human rights in Burma--issued the following statement marking the one-year anniversary of the military coup in Burma:
"A year ago, we were all shocked and heartbroken when the Burmese military threw out the results of free and fair elections . . .
