WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 -- Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, issued the following news release on Jan. 18, 2022:
U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) introduced legislation to remove the name of Francis G. Newlands from Chevy Chase Circle. Newlands, a former U.S. Senator from Nevada, held racist views and worked to keep working class, Black, and Jewish families out of the Chevy Chase community but is currently memorialized on a fountain and plaque in the circle.
