Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is a life-threatening complication of Hirschsprung Disease, a common cause of intestinal obstruction in newborns. Hirschsprung Disease results from incomplete development of the enteric nervous system, or the "brain of the gut," which is essential to life.
