WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 -- Rep. Fred Upton, R-Michigan, issued the following statement on the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland:
"I'm saddened to wake to the news that a true leader and a giant of the House has passed. Elijah Cummings was fiercely protective and proud of his beloved Baltimore and served our nation with pride.
"He was a role model, mentor, and friend to members on both sides of the aisle whose presence in Congress will be missed.
