WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 -- Rep. Marcia L. Fudge, D-Ohio, issued the following statement commemorating the 54th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965:
"The signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a watershed moment in our nation's history. This key legislation lifted restrictions preventing African Americans from voting in federal, state and local elections, and gave a sense of hope to the quarter of a million new African American voters at the time.
