WASHINGTON, June 19 -- Sen. Gary Peters, D-Michigan, issued the following statement recognizing Juneteenth Independence Day:
On June 19th each year, Juneteenth Independence Day commemorates the day the last remaining African-American slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation.
"As we recognize Juneteenth Independence Day and the closing of one of our nation's darkest periods, we must acknowledge that the battle for equality is far from finished.
