NEW YORK, Feb. 19 -- Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory issued the following news release:

Wallace Broecker, who propelled key research into the history of Earth's climate and humans' influence upon it, died Feb. 18 in New York. He was 87. The cause was congestive heart failure, said his family. His death was confirmed by Columbia University's Lamont . . .
