CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, Sept. 20 -- The University of Virginia issued the following news release:
During the Civil War, the University of Virginia was predictably a hotbed of the Confederacy, but the flame of Unionism flickered faintly.
"More than 3,000 UVA alumni fought for the Confederacy, and approximately 90 percent of the student body enrolled in the fall of 1860 enlisted into Confederate military units by the end of 1861," said William B. Kurtz, manag . . .
