FLORENCE, South Carolina, March 5 -- Francis Marion University issued the following news:
Dr. Walter Douglas "Doug" Smith, Francis Marion University's beloved founding president, has passed away.
Smith, who served the university from its opening in 1970 through 1983, died last weekend in a Columbia, S.C. hospital. He was 99.
Dr. Fred Carter, Francis Marion's current president, says Smith will be sorely missed by the entire Patriot commun . . .
