Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum to Return Sacred Pipes to Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota
WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (TNSFR) -- The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum, Ignacio, Colorado, is preparing to return four sacred cultural items to the Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. The objects, which are three full pipestone stemmed pipes and one pipe bowl are scheduled for potential repatriation on or after September 22, 2025.
The pipes were donated to the museum in 2023 as part of a collection that was deteriorating in a basement. The donor had a history of trading with Tribes in the
