Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to Return Sacred Basket to Indian Tribe of the Chemehuevi Reservation, California
WASHINGTON, May 14 (TNSFR) -- The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia, has announced its intention to repatriate a sacred basket that is integral to traditional Native American religious practices. The basket, made from grasses, sedge root, bracken root, and redbud, was crafted in the late 19th century.
It was purchased from Arthur W. Erickson in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1994 by Robert and Nancy Nooter and was subsequently donated to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in March 2016
