OAK RIDGE, Tennessee, March 25 -- The U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory issued the following news release:

Scientists at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have determined how to avoid costly and potentially irreparable damage to large metallic parts fabricated through additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, that is caused by residual stress in the material.
