AUSTIN, Texas, May 20 -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas issued the following statement on May 19, 2021:

Gov. Greg Abbott today signed Senate Bill 8 into law, banning abortion in Texas as early as six weeks gestation and allowing anyone -- even a stranger -- to sue any person who supports someone seeking abortion care.
