WASHINGTON, July 23 -- Sen. Bob Menendez, D-New Jersey, ranking Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following opening statement at a hearing entitled "Advancing Effective U.S. Competition With China: Objectives, Priorities, and Next Steps" on July 22:

"I am deeply concerned that the Administration's approach is one that labors under the mistaken belief that just being confrontational is the same thing as being competitive.
