WASHINGTON, July 13 -- Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-New York, issued the following statement on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decree to convert Istanbul's Hagia Sophia from a museum to a mosque:
"For over 85 years, the Hagia Sophia has served as a cherished cultural landmark and revered spiritual site welcoming to those of all religions alike.
Erdogan's decree to strip the Hagia Sophia of its museum status and deem it a mosque is a pointed attempt to unnecessaril . . .
