WASHINGTON, July 3 -- Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr., D-New Jersey, issued the following statement on the 56th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964:

The Act ended segregation and job discrimination based on race, religion, sex or national origin nationwide.
