NEW YORK, April 23 -- New York Mayor Bill de Blasio issued the following news release:
Mayor de Blasio announced that the jail population fell below 4,000 last week, the lowest figure since 1946. The rapid decrease of incarcerated people comes as a direct result of the City's response to the unique health and safety threat COVID-19 poses to the jail system.
