WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 -- Rep. Eliot L. Engel, D-New York, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following floor remarks in support of a resolution (H.Res. 552) calling on the Russian Federation to provide evidence of wrongdoing or to release U.S. citizen Paul Whelan:
"As we stand here on the House floor, an American citizen is being wrongfully held in a Russian prison without trial-- without any evidence of his supposed crime... denied his rights...suffering . . .
