In forests throughout the world, certain fungi (usually referred to as wood-decay fungi) play an essential role in the decomposition of the coarse woody debris derived from the trees and other woody plants present. The decomposition of this coarse woody debris is a critical process, since it is important in nutrient recycling, soil development and the carbon budget of forests . . .
