WASHINGTON, June 23 -- Rep. Eliot L. Engel, D-New York, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement on an attempted coup in Amhara Regional State in Ethiopia:
"I'm alarmed by reports of an attempted coup in Amhara Regional State in Ethiopia, which resulted in the death of President Ambachew Mekonnen and Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces Seare Mekonnen.
