CAMP SMITH, Hawaii, Nov. 21 -- The U.S. Marine Corps issued the following news release:
On Nov. 20, 1943, Marines from Co. K, 3rd Bn., 2nd Marines, began a 76-hour battle on Tarawa Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean that would become the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history up to that time.
The third officer ashore at Red Beach One that day was Marine Lt. James L. Fawcett, who ended up losing half of his platoon in the first two hours of fighting.
