Partners Revitalize Healthy Habitats in The Natural State
The Arkansas State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation recently partnered with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the USDA Forest Service to restore habitat for wild turkeys and other game and non-game species within the Mount Magazine Ranger District of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest.
The project was focused on reducing encroaching red cedar on nearly 100 acres within the national forest's QuailFocal Area -- a cost-share project site that encompasses roughly 1,700 acres. The encroaching cedar reduces the habitat quality for wild turkeys, quail and many other species. Now, restoration efforts are keeping that habitat a haven for wildlife.
Previous timber harvests within the focal area have opened the canopy, allowing for grasses and forbs to grow, and a prescribed burn conducted in early winter of 2023 aided in this process. However, red cedar was still dominating the midstory canopy, which was preventing the regeneration of favorable pine, oak and other mast species.
The most recent mechanical cedar cut decreased the amount of cedar within the project area. A follow-up prescribed burn will be conducted in 2026, removing younger cedar trees and stimulating native grasses and forbs.
"Mount Magazine Ranger District is a shortleaf-pine-dominated, mixed-oak forest, and the encroaching cedar understory has created a closed canopy that isn't ideal for turkeys or quail," said Kacie Bauman, NWTF district biologist. Removing the cedar will allow for more sunlight to reach the forest floor, creating an understory beneficial to nesting and brooding habitat, rich with native forbs and legumes, as well as allowing oak regeneration in the district. Maintaining oaks in the bottoms, creating a more desirable open understory of native plant species, and rotational prescribed burning creates diversity across the landscape beneficial to turkeys throughout their life cycles. Diversity across landscapes and providing high-quality nesting and brood-rearing habitat is what makes this such an exciting project, and knowing NWTF was able to contribute to making this project a success is what it is all about."
This project dovetails into the Forest Service's efforts to mulch an additional 700 acres within the Quail Focal Area to stimulate early successional habitat. With over 250 wildlife openings managed in cooperation with the AGFC, wild turkeys, quail, white-tailed deer, black bears and many other species are benefiting from the collaborative efforts of partners that care about healthy habitats and healthy harvests.

NCGA Leader Calls Out Brazil on Trading Practices
Author: Bryan Goodman
Matt Frostic, a Michigan farmer and leader representing the National Corn Growers Association, told the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative this week that the organization supports the proposed 25% tariffs that would include Brazilian ethanol imports and urged the investigation to consider the full scope of the South American country's action that have penalized U.S. corn growers.
The remarks were made during ahearing on the issue on Monday and come after Brazil imposed an 18% tariff on U.S. ethanol in addition to other actions domestically and internationally aimed at placing U.S. ethanol at a disadvantage compared to Brazilian ethanol.
"U.S. corn growers felt the effects of the tariff as market access sharply declined," Frostic told the agency. "In 2018, Brazil was the top market for U.S. ethanol exports by far. Once the tariff was reimposed, the market nearly evaporated, showing that Brazil's tariff was indeed responsible for the sudden decline of U.S. ethanol exports to Brazil."
While Brazil was imposing tariffs that resulted in a decline of American exports, its sugarcane ethanol was being imported into the United States at an increasing rate, Frostic added.
As USTR considers additional proposed action to impose import restrictions, Frostic called on the agency to look at Brazil's refusal to allow U.S. ethanol producers to obtain approval for their domestic biofuels program. He said the actions show clear discrimination against U.S. ethanol producers.
"The United States does not impose such restrictions on participation in our Renewable Fuel Standard, and Brazilian companies are allowed to participate. This should be given strong consideration as USTR continues this investigation."
Frostic also said Brazil's international advocacy touting a low environmental footprint is nothing short of a guise to artificially boost its carbon intensity score over American farmers.
"Brazil claims that its corn is a secondary crop, such that inputs and land used are more minor compared to the United States," he said. "But this could not be more incorrect, as land conversion from grassland or rainforest in Brazil is not properly documented."
Frostic said more needs to be done to regain market access to Brazil and ensure an international level playing field for U.S. corn growers.

MS Study Alert: Perimenopause and Multiple Sclerosis
Summary: The purpose of this national research study is to better understand the experiences, needs, and health changes of women with multiple sclerosis (MS) during the menopausal transition in order to develop and provide needed information and resources. This study is funded by a 2025 request for applications on women's health from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Details
Study Goal: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, workingwith a team of national experts in MS Neurology and Women's Health and a Community Advisory Board of women with MS, are exploring the information needs of, and the impacts of perimenopause on, women with MS. The researchers will use the findings to develop practical, accessible resources for women living with MS. This project includes a national longitudinal survey, optional follow-up interviews, and the development of profile-specific resource toolkits.
Who is eligible to participate in the survey and interviews?
Women diagnosed with MS who:
* are between the ages of 45 and 60,
* identify as female or meet the study's female eligibility criteria, and
* are in the late reproductive stage, early perimenopause, or late perimenopause, based on menstrual history.
Individuals who are currently pregnant or within 12 months postpartum are not eligible. For people using systemic hormones or with procedures that may affect bleeding patterns, perimenopausal stage will be determined based on menstrual history. Final eligibility criteria will be confirmed by the research team.
Researchers are recruiting approximately 2,300 women with MS from across the United States. Recruitment aims to include participants from different regions, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and urban and rural communities.
What does participation involve?
Participants will be asked to complete three online surveys over approximately 10 months: one at baseline, one about 5 months later, and one about 10 months later. The survey takes 20-30 minutes to complete. The study is designed to examine changes over time in areas such as physical and cognitive functioning, menopausal symptoms, daily activities, social participation, emotional well-being, and quality of life. A smaller group of participants will be invited to take part in a follow-up individual interview to share more about their experiences.

Global Care Economy Set to Create Significant Growth Opportunities as Care-Dependent Population Reaches up to 4.6 Billion by 2035
Rapid population ageing and care worker shortages are accelerating demand for next-generation care infrastructure, AgeTech, and integrated care ecosystems
-
Silicon Valley, California - Frost & Sullivan's latest analysis, The Global Care Economy, Transformationsand Opportunities to 2035, reveals that demographic change, mounting healthcare workforce shortages, and accelerating digital innovation are reshaping the global care economy and creating substantial opportunities across healthcare, technology, infrastructure, finance, mobility, and education.
The study forecasts that the global care-dependent population will reach between 3.2 billion and 4.6 billion people by 2035, with the elderly population representing the fastest-growing segment. This demographic shift is driving demand for innovative care delivery models, AI-powered technologies, and integrated care ecosystems capable of meeting growing needs while improving productivity and resilience.
"The care economy is rapidly evolving from a predominantly labour-intensive sector into a technology-enabled ecosystem where artificial intelligence, robotics, connected devices, and integrated digital platforms will play an increasingly important role," said Neha Anna Thomas, Associate Director, Economic Analytics, at Frost & Sullivan. "The organisations best positioned for long-term growth will be those that combine technological innovation with human-centred care, improve accessibility, and deliver measurable outcomes across the care continuum."
Frost & Sullivan identifies several transformational trends expected to reshape the global care economy over the coming decade. Rapid population ageing and increasing demand for specialised care skills are accelerating investment in AI-driven workforce training and integrated education platforms.
At the same time, healthcare providers are moving towards connected care ecosystems that combine healthcare, childcare and eldercare services, supported by smart infrastructure and digital care navigation platforms. AI, predictive analytics, cloud computing and wearable technologies are also enabling more personalised, preventive and efficient care delivery, while greater collaboration between governments, businesses and investors is creating new funding models for care infrastructure and multi-generational care services.
The analysis highlights several high-growth opportunities emerging across the broader care economy. Physical and technology-enabled care infrastructure, including smart care facilities and home retrofitting services, is expected to attract significant investment. SilverTech and AgeTech solutions - including AI-powered wearables, elderly care robotics, fall detection technologies and digital health platforms - will help older adults maintain independence while easing pressure on healthcare systems. Meanwhile, childcare services, digital learning platforms, caregiver upskilling solutions, and technology-enabled care marketplaces are creating new opportunities for innovation across adjacent industries.

Evan Dean joins NGFA as vice president, government and legislative affairs
The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) today announced that Evan Dean has joined the association as vice president, government and legislative affairs, starting July 13. In this role, Dean will lead NGFA's federal advocacy efforts and help advance the association's policy priorities on behalf of the grain, feed, processing, and export industries.
Dean joins NGFA from the office of U.S.Representative Mike Flood (R-Neb.), where he most recently served as legislative director. In that role, he advised Congressman Flood on legislative strategy and policy matters and managed a portfolio covering agriculture, trade, energy, transportation, and telecommunications. He also supervised the legislative team and worked closely with congressional offices, federal agencies, industry stakeholders, and agricultural organizations to advance policy priorities.
Dean's understanding of the grain and feed industry was shaped in part by his work representing Nebraska's First Congressional District. As highlighted in NGFA's Harvest Economy report, the industry supports more than 15,000 jobs and contributes nearly $5.5 billion in economic impact across the district.
"Evan Dean brings valuable Capitol Hill experience and a strong understanding of the policy issues that matter most to NGFA members," said NGFA President and CEO Mike Seyfert. "Having represented a district where our industry has a significant economic impact, Evan understands firsthand the important role grain and feed businesses play in local economies and throughout the agricultural supply chain. His work on agriculture, trade, renewable fuels, and appropriations issues, combined with his ability to build relationships across government and industry, will strengthen NGFA's advocacy efforts as we continue advancing policies that support the grain, feed, and processing industry."
Prior to serving as legislative director, Dean was a legislative assistant for Congressman Flood, where he oversaw agriculture, trade, appropriations, energy, telecommunications, and natural resources policy. During his tenure, he helped advance sustainable aviation fuel initiatives, secured federal support for agricultural research priorities, and engaged extensively with agricultural stakeholders across Nebraska. A critical issue for NGFA's members, Dean has also worked to advance local transportation priorities, improve access, and reduce barriers to moving goods across the county.
Before joining Congressman Flood's office, Dean served as a legislative correspondent for Congressman Greg Pence (R-Ind.) and previously worked in the office of Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.).
Dean earned a bachelor's degree in public policy leadership from the University of Mississippi, where he graduated magna cum laude.
