Chairman Nadler Issues Opening Remarks at Markup of Student Borrower Bankruptcy Relief Act

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 -- Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following opening remarks on Sept. 29 during the markup of the Student Borrower Bankruptcy Relief Act (H.R. 2648):

"H.R. 2648, the 'Student Borrower Bankruptcy Relief Act of 2019,' addresses head-on the manifest unfairness that student loans--unlike every other unsecured debt, such as credit cards or auto loans--are effectively nondischargeable in bankruptcy.
