SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Illinois, Sept. 24 -- The U.S. Department of Defense's Transportation Command issued the following news release:

In 2000, Kevin Hines jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge, spanning San Francisco Bay, California, and plunged 245 feet at 75 miles per hour, hitting the water in four seconds.

Hines survived his suicide attempt with the help of a sea lion, which kept him afloat until the Coast Guard arrived.
