NEW DELHI, Sept. 2 -- The government of India issued the following news release from the Ministry of Environment and Forests:
Forest land has been diverted to non-forest purposes with the prior permission of Government. So far, 20,871 proposals involving about 11.02 lakh ha of forest land have been accorded approval during the period from 25.10.1980 to 30.06.2010 for various developmental purposes such as irrigation, roads, dispensary/hospitals, drinking water, hydel, Thermal, rai . . .
