HONOLULU, Dec. 3 -- The University of Hawaii issued the following news release:
The Hawaiian Islands are one of the outstanding volcanic features on Earth, but their origins have been shrouded in mystery. Still in debate is a theory that was proposed forty years ago, which states that mid-plate hotspots such as Hawaiʻi are generated by upwelling mantle plumes from the base of the lower mantle.
