LANSING, Michigan, July 11 -- The Michigan Environmental Council issued the following news: Thursday morning, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its partners released the 2020 Seasonal Forecast of Harmful Algal Blooms for Lake Erie. SILVER SPRING, Maryland, July 10 -- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued the following news: Each summer, the colors of Western Lake Erie start to shift to a deep, slimy green. The cause? Harmful algal blooms, out-of-control algal growths that can contaminate drinking water, create health problems for swimmers and pets, and interfere with boating and fishing. WASHINGTON, July 10 -- The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued the following news release: NOAA and its research partners are forecasting that western Lake Erie will experience a moderate harmful algal bloom this summer. This year's bloom is expected to measure 4.5 on the severity index - among the smaller blooms since 2011 - but could possibly range between 4 and 5.5, compared to 7.3 last year.
