The system of cooperative finance is more than a business model, it's one of the most successful social movements in American history. America's Credit Unions President/CEO Scott Simpson shared this with thousands of credit union leaders Monday at Governmental Affairs Conference 2026.
Credit unions' greatness is the sum of millions of individual stories, Simpson added, and those stories are essential tothe movement's future.
"I'm guessing every one of you can think of one of those stories. That's a humanity that isn't found anywhere else in retail financial services, and you as credit union leaders... as board members, marketers, communicators, and advocates... you're part of the process of capturing, and retelling, these stories of humanity," Simpson said. "As someone who has spent a career on both sides of policy meetings, I can tell you just one of those stories, coupled with data that brings the scope and scale of this work, resonates a hundred times deeper than any chart. Every meeting has graphs, facts, and figures, but most do not have a ready example of a life changed for the better."
Simpson shared a story of credit union impact from his own family, as well as a member story that struck him: Dr. Jay Camerino, who found help and support at a local credit union, became assistant superintendent at Long Beach Unified School District, and now serves on a credit union board.
Experiences like that are at stake if credit unions do not advocate, Simpson added, because the cooperative finance model remains-and always will be-under attack.
"The truth is, every banker argument is based on one fundamental lie, and that lie is that growth somehow equals a departure from the foundational philosophy of being a cooperative financial institution. And that is simply not true. But that hasn't stopped the banks from spreading that lie, and attempting to divide our movement from within," he said. "We cannot allow ourselves to be divided. Our mighty, small credit unions and large credit unions have so much more in common than any for-profit bank.
"As a unified movement, all of us must have the discipline and wisdom to see this model is under constant threat. And the discipline and wisdom to stay together."
The organizational imperative of America's Credit Unions is federal advocacy, especially vital this year to:
* Defeat government price controls and interchange mandates;
* Modernize reporting thresholds and ensure they are updated with inflation; and
* Empower credit unions to combat fraud and scams that continue to rise in cost.
He closed with a challenge to attendees, and the entire credit union movement:
"You and I are the stewards of this great social movement. There are 145 million people who are looking to us to stand between them and those who would destroy the pathway to their pursuit of happiness, to their economic freedom. That's why we're here," he said. "We cannot give an inch to those who seek to discount this difference by merely institutionalizing credit unions. We need to capture and speak of the transformation that is delivered in the lives of your members, somewhere in your branches, every day."

Pittsburgh bikeshare workers with POGOH voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to join the Transport Workers Union of America, the largest union of bikeshare workers nationwide. The decisive vote came quickly after POGOH workers filed to join the TWU last month.
"Today's victory is a big step forward for POGOH bikeshare workers who want the benefits of a contract and being a part of the country'slargest bikeshare union," said TWU International President John Samuelsen. "We'll now begin the task of securing a critical first contract that locks in quality-of-life improvements and build on the work we've done representing Bike Mechanics, Technicians and other workers in cities across the country."
Workers in Pittsburgh are seeking to join TWU Local 320, which represents bikeshare workers in New York City, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, and Los Angeles. POGOH workers are currently working in a warehouse that lacks proper heat in the winter, ventilation in the summer, and are seeking better wages. And Pittsburgh bikeshare workers are currently tasked with shoveling snow in the winter without additional pay, unlike TWU-represented workers in New York and Washington, DC.
"We were able to move quickly to achieve victory in Pittsburgh, but now the work begins to draft and ratify a first contract," said TWU Organizing Director Angelo Cucuzza. "I also want to thank the workers in Pittsburgh who wanted to fight for a better workplace and our TWU member-organizers for their hard work."

With momentum from 6,000 credit union advocates gathered in Washington, D.C., for the Governmental Affairs Conference, relentless advocacy continues in tandem with a nationwide digital advertising campaign.
This week, in conjunction with the conference, America's Credit Unions is sponsoring Politico Morning Money and The Hill Morning Report to urge lawmakers to oppose the Credit CardCompetition Act.
The national campaign launch follows weeks of credit union grasstops and communications efforts to highlight the unintended consequences of credit card mandates following President Trump's support for the legislation. The ad buy includes digital video, online radio, and targeted newsletter placements running nationwide, directing consumers to contact lawmakers through an advocacy action alert opposing the proposed credit card mandates.
"The Durbin-Marshall credit card mandates are a solution in search of a problem that will ultimately make credit less accessible and everyday purchases less secure for middle class families," said Scott Simpson, president/CEO of America's Credit Unions. "Credit unions are hearing directly from their consumer members who are concerned about fraud, rising costs, and maintaining access to safe and affordable credit. This campaign ensures that consumers and policymakers alike understand what is at stake."
Digital ads are running in the districts of more than 70 lawmakers in both the House and Senate, with additional placements in the Washington, D.C., market during GAC.
Thousands of credit union leaders attending GAC will meet with lawmakers March 2-5 to share how proposed routing mandates could reduce access to credit, weaken fraud protections, and increase costs for consumers.

Government launches consultation on measures to keep children safe across the internet
Commenting on the launch of the government's consultation on children's digital wellbeing, including social media age bans and the impact of AI chatbots and gaming, Daniel Kebede, General Secretary, of the National Education Union, said;
"Government efforts to address the harms caused to children by social media is long overdue. This consultation must lead to swift and decisive action. While ministers consider whether to raise the age of access to social media or bring in other measures, children will continue to be exposed to extreme and dangerous content. Our recently published Algorithm Experiment shows that, on average, 13 year olds are served harmful content within just three minutes of scrolling.
"The clearest way to protect children now is for the government to raise the age of access to social media to 16. Proposals like overnight curfews completely miss the point. Children are not just being harmed because they are online too late at night - they are being harmed because algorithms are designed to push them towards the most shocking, violent and sexual content from the moment they log on.
"If the government is serious about protecting children, it should move quickly from consultation to action. Raising the age of access to social media to 16 would provide an immediate safeguard, rather than delaying as another generation of children is fed harmful content by Big Tech's profit driven algorithms."

NEA's Read Across America Brings the Joy of Reading--and the Freedom to Read--to Students and Classrooms Nationwide
Across the country, students and educators are celebrating reading today and every day, as our classrooms and communities participate in NEA's Read Across America, the association's flagship literacy program providing joyful, inclusive reading experiences for every student. Today, kindergarten and first-grade students at Cardinal Elementary School, in Arlington, Virginia, kicked off this year's celebration by hosting a national "Read-In" with NEA President Becky Pringle as well as other union leaders and Arlington Education Association members. Cardinal students, of all grades, also received new books, donated to them by NEA.
Beyond classroom celebrations, NEA's Read Across America reinforces a commitment to protecting students' right to read books that reflect their identities and experiences by ensuring access to inclusive, diverse, and engaging books throughout the year. The program highlights authors and illustrators whose stories reflect the rich backgrounds and lived experiences of today's students while helping educators and families find books they can enjoy together.
"On NEA's Read Across America Day, we recognize those who intentionally carve out space for students to read boldly and freely--who host Read-Ins, not just as celebrations, but as commitments to the freedom to read," said Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association. "At a time when some politicians are censoring ideas and banning books, educators, students, and parents are standing firm. They know books help students understand both our shared humanity and our differences, and they refuse to let fear dictate what young people can learn. In classrooms across the country, choosing to teach the truth, protect diverse stories, and defend every student's right to read is not just instruction--it is principled resistance. Every student, no matter their race or ZIP code, deserves educators who safeguard their freedom to read in a world as complex and expansive as the one they inhabit."
Elsewhere, from John Will Elementary in Mobile, Alabama, where costumed guest readers shared stories, to Anderson, South Carolina, where students at Centerville Elementary are taking a literary journey to a new state each day during the first week of March, schools across the nation are turning reading into an adventure. In Shawnee Mission, Kansas, the school district keeps the celebration going year-round through "Read Across SMSD," providing every school with monthly themed books and resources.
When schools and libraries are filled with vibrant, representative collections, students build curiosity, strengthen critical thinking skills, and deepen their understanding of history, community, and one another--skills essential for shaping a stronger future.
With an estimated 45 million people participating nationwide, NEA's Read Across America promotes literacy, encourages a love of reading, and honors the importance of books in our lives through year-round events, resources, and promotion of diverse titles. NEA is making available online resources for all to use and share not only during the first week of March, but throughout any time of the year in celebration of NEA's Read Across America.

Credit unions are tackling affordability concerns for consumers every single day. As policy discussions in Washington D.C. center on this issue, it's important to connect the dots so lawmakers fully understand credit unions impact on consumer affordability.
A Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) panel tackled this topic with a four person panel. First Service Credit Union President/CEO David Bleazard joined America's CreditUnions Chief Membership and Engagement Office Anthony Demangone, Vice President of Strategic Communications Cassie Blake, and Head of Political Affairs Trey Hawkins. The group discussed the importance of drilling down the credit union difference to show how policy impacts real people.
"Politicians represent people and that's ultimately who they want to hear about," said Blake.
Bleazard shared examples of programs already at work in his own credit union that result in real economic empowerment for members. "We don't need to be legislated to help our members-that's the mission," he added.
The group also discussed how to train staff to recognize "moments of magic" in capturing stories that should be elevated and highlighted. "Credit unions can't miss the opportunity to take the everyday moments that are lifechanging for members and use them as differentiators between our competitors," said Demangone.
Hawkins shared data illustrating how credit unions significantly outperform large national banks across key financial metrics due to the not-for-profit, cooperative financial model. He noted credit unions do better than large national banks across every meaningful measure of trust, value, and community impact. With affordability a priority issue, illustrating these facts with lawmakers is key as attendees prepare to head to Capitol Hill later this week.
GAC continues through Wednesday. Stay tuned to our Daily News and follow along on social media for highlights of the industry's largest advocacy event.
